Nothing short of beautiful, a beautiful book with an even more beautiful message

One in 8 Billion is a colourful, engaging and genuinely beautiful children’s book. It’s warm, engaging and uplifting. Every page is filled with thoughtful details that spark a child’s imagination, from the diverse characters and their varied appearances to the many interests and experiences represented throughout. There is something for every child to recognise, relate to or connect with.

From a teaching perspective, I love how accessible this book is for young readers. The language is simple and achievable, while still offering plenty of opportunities for learning and discussion. It could easily be used to explore poetry, rhyme and rhythm, as well as emotions, identity, self-esteem and the qualities that make each of us unique.

The illustrations are incredible. This is not a book children will simply rush through; I imagine most could spend all day studying each page and still discover something new. It reminds me a little of Where’s Wally? in that sense, and we all know how iconic those books are for children. There is so much to notice, discuss and revisit that it feels like an endless source of entertainment, rather than a book children would read once and put away.

More importantly, I absolutely love the message being shared with young readers: among billions of people, every child is gifted, beautiful and completely unique. I also appreciate that the book acknowledges mistakes as a normal part of life and learning. This aligns beautifully with what we try to teach children at school every day.

The page exploring emotions particularly stood out to me. The floating visual representations of different emotions are beautiful and intriguing, creating a natural opportunity for children to identify, discuss and connect with their own feelings.

I would genuinely love to have this book in my classroom, not only as a story to read together, but also as one students could independently reach for when they need emotional regulation support, before re-entering the learning space after a brain break or time spent regulating, or simply when they need something uplifting to boost their confidence and remind them of their worth.

It is colourful, meaningful, educational and full of heart, a beautiful celebration of individuality and a lovely message to place in the hands of young children.

A wonderful addition to every classroom.

One in 8 Billion is a powerful and captivating story that beautifully explores the importance of growth mindset, individuality and self-discovery. Through the journey of a young boy, readers are reminded that every step, choice, thought and action helps to shape who we are.

As he navigates the choices he makes each day, the young boy begins to discover what makes him uniquely himself. This beautiful story is a meaningful read for all ages and offers endless opportunities for rich language development, thoughtful reflection and engaging discussion.

With its powerful message of self-care, individuality and the importance of embracing who we are, One in 8 Billion is a wonderful addition to every classroom, home and bookshelf.

Supports every pillar of emotional development.

As a social worker, I absolutely loved this book. It beautifully supports the pillars of healthy emotional development: self-worth, emotional awareness, resilience, kindness and connection.

Such a beautiful, gentle way to help little ones understand themselves and their emotions, while reminding them of their value in this world.

Well done Elle and Joel on creating such a meaningful book with such an important message!
